Water Rocket Competition

Water rockets use water and compressed air as engine power. Participants are required to use the same materials to manufacture water rockets and achieve the farthest flight distance.

Our rocket flew at a horizontal distance of 132.9 m and won first place!

I joined the team of the Academic Guidance Center and we recorded some videos to help young students with learning difficulties in the course of General Chemistry. As of May 2024, the series of videos has received 105k views.

Summer Teaching Support Team

In science class, pupils were observing the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide in test tubes to acquaint the catalysis of enzymes. Photo taken by Jingjing HU.

In the summer of 2019, I went to Xulao Primary School in Anhui Province with Summer Teaching Support Team of Peasant Rural and Agriculture Association (PRAA) of ZJU. I spent 3 weeks there and acted as a fourth & fifth grade science teacher. Our team finally won the Gold Award for “China Education Support Project: Chinese College Students Rural Teaching Support Award” (only two teams nationwide won this prize).

One thing I still remember is, once the sponsor required us to teach pupils about enzymes. In fact, this is something that middle school students learn. In order to help students understand the concept of enzymes, I came up with an idea and bought some pig liver from a small restaurant, which contains catalase and can decompose hydrogen peroxide. Adding pig liver and FeCl3 separately to hydrogen peroxide, the high efficiency of enzyme catalysis can be demonstrated by comparing the rate of bubble formation. As shown in the picture, all the students observed the experimental phenomenon with great enthusiasm and concentration.
